Kraft Foods Suzhou Plant Drives Sustainable Operation through Energy-Saving Innovation

Shanghai, China, January 12, 2012 -- Kraft Foods (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. was recently awarded a special subsidy of RMB 110,000 by the Suzhou government for its two energy-saving projects, namely "Recovery of Air Compressor Remnant Heat" and "Energy-saving Air-conditioning System". The subsidy is part of a scheme by Suzhou Industrial Park government to offer financial recognition to businesses that made outstanding achievements in energy-saving innovation and  recycling efforts  in 2011. For Kraft Foods Suzhou Plant, since the launch of the two projects in 2007, 88,492 m3 of natural gas per year and 201,882 KWH of electricity per year have been saved. In other words, a total of 178 tons of coal has been saved. "We have invested more than RMB 600,000 in these two projects," said Li Weihong, Associate Director of Kraft Foods Suzhou. "These projects help bring the total energy consumption of our production process under control in the long run, which creates sustainable economic efficiency for the company." 

The project of “Recovery of Air Compressor Remnant Heat" works on a simple principle: making use of the heat generated by mixing and compressing natural air and lubricating oil in the production process. The minor innovation saves a lot of natural gas every year for the company's water boilers that supply hot water to its employees. Before the innovation, high temperature lubricating oil was directly sent to the cooler and left there to cool down in the air--a process that discharged a lot of heat. The idea behind the innovation was to insert a "barrier" – an efficient thermal energy converter plate between the compressor and the cooler to redirect as much as 75% of the redundant heat to warm up water in showers before discharging it into the cooler.  The "Energy-saving Air-conditioning System" project was enabled by an efficient and new environmentally-friendly refrigeration system, whose energy efficiency ratio meets the National Grade-1 standard, to achieve higher efficiency and refrigeration performance of the system's compressors. Saving energy this way can indirectly keep down operation costs.
