Kraft Hope Kitchen Volunteers Bring Delicious Experience to Rural Children in Qinghai

(May 23 2011 -- Qinghai, China) Kraft Hope Kitchen volunteers brought delicious experience to children in Qinghai as they arrived at the Zhongba Central School in Ledu County of Qinghai Province, to unveil the first Kraft Hope Kitchen in Qinghai on May 12. On behalf of Kraft Foods China, the volunteers also donated 1 million RMB worth of Kraft Foods products to the 30 schools in Ledu County via the China Youth Development Foundation.

"Kraft Hope Kitchen" is a charity project jointly initiated by Kraft Foods China and the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) in 2009. This project aims to improve rural students’ food supply and nutrition, and to improve the nutritional knowledge and food safety practice of rural teachers and kitchen staff. By the end of 2010, 100 Kraft Hope Kitchens was established in 100 Hope Schools across Anhui, Yunnan, Jilin, Hunan and Hebei Provinces, all equipped with cooking utensils, refrigerator, disinfection cabinet, as well as nutrition guidelines and food safety practice posters and booklets. More importantly, from 2009, employees and business partners of Kraft Foods China continued to provide students and teachers with food donation, health and nutrition knowledge via regular volunteer visits to the schools. More than 50,000 school children of Kraft Hope Kitchen project have benefits from the project.

Kraft Foods China and CYDF joined hands again in May, 2011 to build 10 new Kraft Hope Kitchen in Ledu County, Qinghai. After the unveiling of the 1st Kraft Hope Kitchen, the volunteers taught children the need to have balanced and nutritious diet, and together with the children enjoyed the first meal in the new Kraft Hope Kitchen. At the opening of the first Kraft Hope Kitchen in Qinghai, Feng Minhui, representative from CYDF, expressed her appreciation to Kraft Foods China for their support since the first Kraft Hope Kitchen in 2009. “CYDF really appreciate the real contribution made by Kraft Hope Kitchen to improving the dietary nutrition of school children in rural China. We hope that there will be more sectors and individuals who are committed to projects like Kraft Hope Kitchen to benefit even more rural children.” said Ms. Feng Minhui.

While teaching the children, Shen Weihong, a sales manager of Kraft Foods China Xining Office, were impressed by the students’ eagerness to learn about nutrition: “We have been teaching fifth grade students about nutrition and food safety, telling them that you should not eat rotten and out-of-date food. The children have never had the chance to learn this before. We are very proud to help the children know more about food and safety so they can grow up more healthily and happily. ”

Zhang Feng, a distributor of Kraft Foods in Xining, explained the food safety guidelines and the concept of nutrition diet pagoda to third grade students at the Zhongba Central School. He was moved by the enthusiasm of the children: “It is the first time I have taken part as a Kraft Hope Kitchen volunteer. I’m really grateful for such an opportunity to participate in this charity effort. I’ll certainly be supporting and participating in the programs in the future.”

About Kraft Hope Kitchen

"Kraft Hope Kitchen" is a charity project jointly initiated by Kraft Foods China and the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) in Oct, 2009. This project aims to improve food supply and nutrition of rural Chinese school children, and to improve the nutritional knowledge and food safety practice of rural teachers and kitchen staff.

Kraft Foods China donated RMB5.5 million to build the first 100 "Kraft Hope Kitchens" in 5 Chinese provinces - Anhui, Yunnan, Jilin, Hunan and Hebei Provinces. By June, 2010, the 100 well-equipped Kraft Hope Kitchens were in full use to provide hot meals for 50,000 rural school children. Kraft Foods China and CYDF joined hands again in May, 2011 to build 10 new Kraft Hope Kitchen in Ledu County, Qinghai.

Every Kraft Hope Kitchen is equipped with standard cooking utensils, refrigerator, disinfection cabinet, as well as nutrition guidelines and food safety practice posters and booklets. Headmasters from 100 Hope school have received trainings on children's nutrition and food safety practice. Kraft Foods China employees and business partners regularly provide volunteer services and donations to Kraft Hope Kitchens. Kraft Foods China, together with the China Youth Development Foundation, will work together to expand the Kraft Hope Kitchen project by involving more societal participation.
